Varicella is a highly contagious airborne disease that spreads easily through coughing or sneezing of ill individuals or through direct contact with secretions from the rash. Varicella affects nearly all children worldwide who do not have immunity. Annual incidence is estimated at 80-90 million cases. Recently developed statistical methods were used to investigate temporal, spatial and spatio-temporal variation in varicella infections in Valencia over a 5-year period. The analysis of the data showed statistically significant seasonal variation, spatial clustering and spatio-temporal interaction in the pattern of incidence.
